“Alleluia was commissioned by the Ellensburg Women’s Chorus – a group that I had the pleasure of accompanying while attending CWU and for which I wrote the majority of my repertoire for Women’s Choir. Sue Wilson, their director, asked for a piece that would feature a more prominent rhythmic drive and that would include sections of asymmetrical and mixed meter. For a while, I had been wanting to compose an “Alleluia” – a piece built around a one word shout for joy and celebration that translated means “Praise Yaweh” or “Praise God.” This seemed especially fitting for this commission, because, to me, the word “alleluia” fits perfectly into an asymmetrical 3+2+2 feel. This piece is my reflection on some of the different emotions one can feel while praising God – wonder, awe, excitement, happiness, and joy.”
